The network structure of a fieldbus typically allows Daisy chain, star, ring, branch, and tree network topologies. Previously, computers were connected to RS-232 (serial connection) in the following way: only two devices could communicate through it.

 This corresponds to the 4-20mA communication scheme currently in use, which requires each device to have its own communication point at the controller level, while the fieldbus corresponds to a current LAN type connection that requires only one communication point at the controller level and allows for multiple (hundreds) analog and digital points to be connected simultaneously.

This reduces both the length and the number of cables required. In addition, since devices communicating over a fieldbus require a microprocessor, multiple points are usually provided by the same device. Some fieldbus devices now support control schemes such as PID control rather than forcing the controller to do the processing.
