One medium-term goal is to extend the use of the SAP platform to IIoT applications. To achieve this, customers need to integrate, aggregate and securely process operational data output from all sites.

In the future, this consolidated data will be provided from SAP Business Suite to OPC UA servers, hosted by individual plants.

Another challenge comes from the fact that these production figures are generated by thousands of programmable logic controllers (PLCS) from multiple manufacturers (usually Siemens and Rockwell) spread across various production plants.

A key technical requirement specified by the customer was the provision of address space filtering and control access capabilities for browsing, as well as communication with downstream PLC systems.
