An increasingly discussed variant of the Industrial iot stack architecture offers two levels at the edge. At the top, AWS iot Greengrass runs MQTT agents that send data to AWS. Under the hood, Kubernetes is a widely used open source container orchestration system that runs different container instances that provide southbound connections to production assets.

Kubernetes(and other similar tools) allows for highly customized and self-developed container management systems. The downside is the extra work required to deploy and operate containers, which solutions such as AWS IoT Greengrass do not have. Kubernetes can also be used for a single edge layer architecture containing cloud connected containers. This approach minimizes the shackles of edge cloud providers and helps companies maintain greater flexibility.

In our case, an automotive OEM uses Softing's edgeConnector family to coordinate in Kubernetes, collect data from PLC and CNC machines, and forward it via the MQTT protocol. This two-tier edge solution provides customers with additional versatility in OT/IT integration (bottom layer) while simplifying the effort and overhead of reliably and securely transferring data to the cloud (top layer).
