The TRICONEX 3607E is known to generally have limited overload capacity due to its short thermal time constant. However, whether for application requirements or (mainly) for protection purposes, a certain overload capability has clear advantages.
Conventional IGCTs with thyristors have excellent short-time overload capabilities, paving the way for the concept of fuse free protection. The IGBT is subject to a fairly low maximum inrush current.
In the mid-to-high power range, the TRICONEX 3607E's individual device rating (as described above) may not be sufficient. By scalability, we mean the applicability of series and parallel connections. A series connection is used to increase the voltage, while a parallel connection increases the total constant current.
The series and parallel connections of IGCT devices are complex and may require a balanced network. The preferred solution is to connect the entire module in parallel and in series (building blocks).
In contrast, the TRICONEX 3607E's series and parallel connections are simple and supported by gate units capable of forming switching behavior (such as active clamping).
