The National Instruments GPI b-140/GPI b-140 a Fiber optic GPIB extender eliminates the limitations of the IEEE 488 standard on cable length and device load while requiring virtually no desktop space. The IEEE 488 standard specifies that the total cable length of a GPIB system cannot exceed 20 meters, and the maximum number of devices is 15. A pair of NI GPIB-140A/2 bus extenders can extend the cable length up to 2 km without compromising the integrity of GPIB and without requiring any application modifications. The GPIB-140A can use up to 1 km of cable.
These GPIB extenders use buffered transfer technology to transfer data at the industry's fastest speeds while keeping cabling costs to a minimum. Each extender has an error checking scheme to ensure error-free links. Using the HS488 protocol, the GPIB-140A extender has a maximum data transfer rate of more than 2.8 megabytes per second.
