Standard hardware circuits retain only 1024 bytes of input/output addressing space and peripherals have an I/O of $000 to $3FF. All standard PC input/output peripherals such as serial and parallel ports, hard and floppy drive controllers, video systems, real-time clocks, system timers, and interrupt controllers are addressed in this input/output space area. The BIOS initializes and configures all of these registers correctly; Adjusting these input/output ports is usually not required directly.

In addition to the I/O port address, I/O devices have a separate hardware interrupt line assignment. Assigned to each interrupt row is a corresponding interrupt vector in memory of $00000 to $003FF of the 256 vector interrupt table.

The 16 masked interrupts and a single non-maskable interrupt (NMI) are listed and their functions in Table 2-3. Table 2-4 on page 43 details the vector in the interrupt vector table Hexadecimal and decimal interrupt numbers are also defined as real numbers and decimal protected modes are shown in Table 2-4 on page 43.
