The Mark VIe I/O package includes a general-purpose processor board and a data acquisition board specific to the type of connected device. The I/O packet of each terminal board digitizes the signal, runs the algorithm, and communicates with the Mark VIe controller.

The I/O packet detects faults by combining special circuits in the data acquisition board with software running on the CPU board. The controller receives and processes the fault state. If both network interfaces are connected, I/O packets transmit and receive inputs and outputs. Each I/O packet also sends an identification message (ID packet) to the host controller when requested.

The packet contains the I/O board's hardware directory number, hardware version, board barcode serial number, firmware directory number, and firmware version. The I/O package's processor board and data acquisition board are rated for operating temperatures from -30°C to 65°C with free convection cooling. The temperature sensor in the I/O packet is accurate to within 2°C. Each I/O block temperature is stored in a database and can be used to trigger an alarm.
