The Redbud plant, located in Luther, Okla., has four identical one-tow units with a total generating capacity of 1.230 megawatts. The plant, which began commercial operations in 2003, is equipped with controls from nine different suppliers. This patchwork of controls poses a number of challenges for the plant.
Khca Le, project manager for control unit upgrades at OG&.E, said: "We recognize that using multiple different controls is necessarily inefficient. We want to integrate these different controls into a single automation platform for reliability and consistency across all units. "Working with Emerson, we completed this major control upgrade in a relatively short period of time, and the positive impact of the upgrade was felt almost immediately."
To address inefficiencies, Emerson replaced the turbine control unit with an integrated OvationTM solution, as well as static excitation and vibration monitoring. In addition, Emerson has made complex mechanical modifications to the steam turbines to provide a single point of failure 嫜 and more accurate and faster response. Through the upgraded turbine control and redundant mechanical design, the turbine can reach the set point, thereby reducing the cold start time of each unit by 25-35 minutes.
