Once installed in a stack, the switch works and performs as a single switch. So you can start with a single switch and add more as the network expands. You can also mix the different products in the A4H family in one stack to provide the required combination of port types and features to meet the requirements of individual applications. In all cases, a bunch of switches are managed as a single network entity as a large product. Install and connect switches by following the instructions in Connecting Stack Cables

On pages 2‐5, the following happens during initialization:

• Manage the stack of switches automatically created, called switch manager switches.

• All other switches are established as member switches in the stack.

The hierarchy of switches that assume the backup manager function is also determined from the stack in the event of a failure, power failure, or disconnection of the current manager.

• The Console port on the manager switch remains active for out-of-band (local) switches, but the Console port on each member switch is deactivated. This enables you to set the IP address and system password from a single Console port. Each switch can now be configured locally using only the manager's Console port, or in the frequency band using a remote device and the CLI command set described in this section. for methods of connecting Console ports for various types of programs, see "Connecting Console Ports for Local", Admin, page 2-20.
