The VMIVME-7700-110000 has an onboard BIOS setup program to control many configuration options. These options are stored in a special non-volatile, battery-supported memory chip, collectively known as the board's "CMOS configuration." CMOS configurations control many details related to hardware behavior from the moment power is applied. When the VMIVME-7700-110000 is shipped, the hard drive type configuration in CMOS is set to AUTO. Details of the VMIVME-7700-110000 BIOS setup program are included in Appendix C.
The VMIVME-7700 accepts a 144-pin SDRAM SODIMM with a maximum capacity of 512 megabytes. The onboard DRAM is shared with the VMEbus via the PCI to VMEbus bridge and can be addressed either by the local processor or by another VMEbus master to address the VMEbus slave interface.
Care must be taken when sharing memory between the local processor and the VMEbus to prevent the VMEbus host from overwriting critical areas of the local processor's memory (such as the operating system). The VMIVME-7700 includes 32K bytes of non-volatile SRAM, which the CPU can access at any time, for storing system data that cannot be lost in the event of a power outage.
