Discrete outputs can be used for only output modules and combined modules that house discrete inputs and outputs. Mechanical relays with dry "C" contacts are most commonly used because they can be applied in AC and DC circuits with multiple voltage ratings, provide normally open and/or closed contacts, have no leakage current, and have the versatility needed to fuse, diagnose, and suppress solenos. Various forms of built-in solenoid interfaces are available to eliminate the cost of external custom fuses and suppression.
