由于技术的进步和需求的多样化，自动化仪表工业已由传统的连续流程工业的自动化（PA）扩展到机械产品加工工业的工厂自动化（FA）和事务处理为特征的办公自动化（OA），后两者在我国近几年发展也很快，今天的FA已发展成具有CAD,CAM,CIMS的全盘自动化。在我国的长春一汽、湖北二汽、上海大众等地已有多处使用机器人的生产线，而作为自动化仪表工业一部分的数控设备生产也形成了产业，我国机电仪一体化的技术方向也受到极大的重视。至于OA也逐步由单机自动化、办公室事务处理等发展成为交通管理、环保管理、市政管理、金融管理、商业物流管理、智能大厦、家庭自动化等多个分支，而且系统也提供事务和事件的处理、调度和辅助决策，这些将会影响到下世纪人们的生活方式。
