The main function of the controller is to execute control modules designed to meet the specific control requirements of the power plant. These control modules use process signals from the controller I/O subsystem and provide process data communication to the rest of the DeltaV control system for operator interaction and data acquisition.
Each controller node can be installed as a simplex or redundant node. The controller is connected to the I/O bracket, which is mounted on the right side of the controller bracket. Up to eight carriers (each with eight cards) can be connected to local bus I/O, for a total of 64 traditional I/O cards. In addition to the eight local I/O carriers, each controller can also communicate with an additional 16 remote I/O units that carry traditional card-based I/O.
In addition to traditional I/O cards, the local bus supports FieldBUS technology, including the Foundation Fieldbus, PROFIBUS DP, DeviceNet, and AS-I protocols. The I/O subsystem also supports serial interface cards and Ethernet I/O interfaces. These different I/O products provide interfaces to meet the needs of control applications.
The SX controller also supports CHARMs and WirelessHART I/O cards. CHARM I/O cards (CIOC) are connected via the controller's redundant Ethernet ports to provide a highly distributed and flexible I/O solution called electronic marshalling. Up to 16 CIOCs can communicate with a single controller, each offering up to 96 individually configurable signal types.
