In addition to the mechanical aspects of the cables and connectors, the technical specifications also take into account a number of electrical issues to ensure that externally connected drivers meet regulatory requirements for electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) radiation and sensitivity. Figure 3 also shows the use of a metal shield covering all four sides of the signal wire to shield the connector, with a convex edge at the end of the connector to ensure a good grounding path between the driver and the PC housing. At the same time, all four sides of the cable end connector have metal protection, ensuring good grounding between the cable and the connector.

The signal contacts in the socket are recessed more deeply into the socket box than the standard internal connectors, which will help prevent any electrostatic discharge near the high-speed signal contacts. The use of a metal shield provides a good grounding loop, which will release any electrostatic discharge charges when inserting or unplugging the cable.

The ground path provided here will help minimize any electromagnetic interference (EMI) radiation from the external drive, but additional steps need to be taken to modify the cable by adding a special shield that wraps the different signal pairs of the cable. Within a standard internal cable, each pair of signal lines is shielded separately. This shielding is used for external cables, but additional wrapping is required.

As the changes summarized above demonstrate, there are important differences between cable and connector construction for internal versus external serial ATA applications to suit specific usage needs. Because of these differences, the connector can be locked to prevent misuse of the unshielded internal cable in external applications, where it would be inappropriate. To achieve this, the internal signal connector in the socket is made wider, and the overall width of the cable end connector is narrower, so that the internal cable cannot be plugged into the external connector. Another easy way to distinguish between the two connectors is that the internal cable has an L-shaped tongue that acts as a simple blindmate key. For external connectors, blindmating is accomplished by moving the signal contacts within the connector away from the center.
