The TRICONEX 3451 Remote Terminal Device (RTU) is a versatile device used to remotely monitor and control various automation equipment and systems. It is often deployed in industrial Settings and is used similarly to programmable logic circuits (PLCS), but to a greater extent. An RTU is considered a stand-alone computer because it has all the basic components that define a computer: processor, memory, and storage. As such, it can be used as an intelligent controller or master controller for other devices that work together to automate a process, such as part of an assembly line.

The TRICONEX 3451 Remote terminal unit is a more advanced version of the PLC that can only follow a specific programming called ladder logic. The RTU is complex and intelligent enough to control multiple processes without user intervention or input from a smarter controller or host controller.
