The REF 543 feeder terminal can be used in combination with a variety of switching devices, including single-bus, dual-bus and dual-machine systems.

The protection function also supports various types of networks, such as neutral ungrounded, arc suppression coil grounded, and partially grounded networks. Its application scope also covers the protection and control of medium-sized three-phase asynchronous motors and reactive power compensation shunt capacitor banks. In addition to protection, star detection, control, condition monitoring and general functions, the REF 543 feeder terminal provides a large number of PLC functions, which allows the multiple automation and sequential logic control functions required for substation automation to be integrated in a single unit.
