There are many types of microcontrollers used to operate devices, as well as a variety of programmable logic controllers (PLCS). These are all great to use, but they lack the openness of today's general-purpose controllers. For these "open" controllers, consumer and hobbyist microcontrollers have many options, and some are even mildly "industrial."

Many types of microcontrollers have been tried in various personal projects, such as modernizing controls on my boat. The flexibility is good, I can use modern programming languages and methods such as C++ and "sketching", and the materials are extremely low.

Especially important for today's applications is the ability to connect a mobile device or browser to a microcontroller to access data for visualization and analysis. One option is to host the web page directly on the controller. The other is to use external software running on a PC or mobile device to access the microcontroller data, which is then displayed and manipulated as needed. I've had good success using Xojo cross-platform rapid application development environment to do this.

However, even taking into account the many advantages of microcontrollers, I know that their sex is questionable and that connecting them to the typical voltage and current signal levels used by standard industrial instruments can be problematic. Nothing I've found has convinced me that these types of controllers are suitable for industrial applications.
