When any object touches the sensor housing, the appearance of the color pattern inside the sensor changes. The camera records images multiple times per second and feeds this data to a deep neural network. The algorithm can detect even the smallest changes in light within each pixel. In a fraction of a second, a trained machine learning model can map the exact position where a finger touches an object, determine the strength of the force, and indicate the direction of the force. The model extrapolates what scientists call a force diagram: it provides a force vector for each point in the three-dimensional fingertip.
