Allen-Bradley 1747-ASB is a remote I/O adapter module that is part of the SLC 500 system. It establishes communication links between SLC or PLC scanners and various 1746 I/O modules via remote I/O. A remote I/O link consists of a master device (i.e., an SLC or PLC scanner) and one or more slave devices that act as adapters. The SLC or PLC map table gets the I/O module map directly from its chassis. For image mapping, it supports discrete transfer and block transfer. The 1747-ASB supports 1/2 slot, 1 slot, and 2 slot addressing for efficient mirror utilization. It is installed in a case with an SLC 500 processor and scans for I/O in the case.
The 1747-ASB module has a backplane current of 5 mA at 375V and 24 mA at 0V. It has a minimum and maximum heat dissipation of 1.875 W. It can transmit I/O data over distances of up to 3040 meters and supports 57.6K, 115.2K and 230.4K baud rates. It allows users to select image sizes for up to 32 logical groups and control up to 30 chassis slots. The 1747-ASB is designed for use in industrial environments and provides NEMA standard noise resistance.

For PLC applications, the main purpose of this module is to realize distributed IO applications through remote I/O networks. With the 1747-ASB, up to 32 SLC cases with the 1747 RIO scanner can be used at a range of 762 meters or 2,500 feet (230.4 KBaud). 1524 meters or 5,000 feet (115.2 KBaud) and 3048 meters or 10,000 feet (57.6 KBaud). The adapter has up to 30 control capabilities, and this 30-slot limit can be segmented into different chassis or racks, each of which houses the RIO scanner and power supply.
In addition to communicating with the remote IO scanner, the module can also be used to communicate with the Allen-Bradley communication card installed directly on the personal computer. This enables remote programming and configuration capabilities, as well as remote control via supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). Alternatively, Allen-Bradley human machine interfaces (Hmis), such as PanelView products, can add remote I/O adapters that enable the HMI to control processes like SCADA systems.
The remote I/O adapter also supports communication with Allen-Bradley encompass partner products as well as third-party gateways and converters to enable third-party communication with other automation products.
