During the following test, the response of the AVR or FCR operating mode can be determined by generating a step change in the voltage setting point. Increasing and decreasing voltage setpoints produce step changes. The typical change in setpoint value is between 1% and 10%. Observe the resulting generator response.
Observe the voltage overshoot and stability time, and adjust the following gain Settings to get the desired performance. A typical test is to run the generator at rated voltage.
Use a chart recorder (or suitable voltage recording device) to monitor the generator's output voltage and start setting changes. If too much transient response overshoot is observed, the Kp value is reduced. If the overshoot is small and the response is too slow, increase the Kp value. Increasing the Ki value reduces the time required to reach a steady state.
In order to improve the transient response of step change, Kd is increased. If there is too much jitter in the steady-state output, reduce the Kd. Since all of these terms affect the characteristic response, it is necessary to balance these three terms to obtain the desired generator response.
